About Us

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations.

We are a secular society open to men of any race, religion, political belief or status.

Based on the traditions of medieval stonemasons who built our castles and cathedrals, today we still use the stonemason’s tools as symbols of our aim to ‘build’ better men and a better world for everyone, whatever their background.

As Freemasons, we use four principles to help define our path through life:

  1. Integrity
  2. Friendship
  3. Respect
  4. Charity

In our present uncertain times, these principles are as important today as they have ever been.

So what's the big mystery?

Much has been written about the mysteries of Freemasonry.  It is true to say that in the past, Freemasonry had not been seen as an open and transparent organisation. The reasons for this went back to the Second World War, when the then leader of Germany did not like Freemasonry.  He clearly stated that when he invaded England, he would round up all Freemasons! This led to the organisation closing ranks to keep its membership hidden.

It has taken a long time, but Freemasonry is working hard to dispel some of the myths surrounding it. We realise we still have some way to go but most of what is said about freemasonry is in fact myth.

If you are considering joining the Freemasons you should understand it is not for everyone, but then neither is the Roundtable or the local Rugby Club. Each are different organisations with different purposes.

Freemasonry and Charity

Our then WM handing over cheque to British Legion

Freemasonry supports many charities and in brief our charitable work can be split into 4 areas:

  • Collecting for the benefit of Freemasons and the families when they are in distress. In 2020 alone  Freemasonry contributed £51.1 million to deserving causes, but it’s not just about donating money! More than 18.5 million hours of volunteer work was undertaken by our members in their communities.
  • Collecting for the main masonic charities that during the Pandemic, freemasonry donated almost 5 million to non-Masonic charities to help the uk overcome it and support those in need.
  • Collecting for the benefit of charities in our local communities.
  • Donations received at our recent Ladies Night raise £700 fo St John’s Ambulanc. Details of our Almoners charity donations to follow.

You will not see freemasons shaking collecting tins or asking for public donations, our charitable fund raising takes place within the Masonic community and if there is a criticism that can be levied at us is that we do not shout loud enough about the good work we do.
